learning to be a kid

Macy only spent about 2 years in her orphanage.
And we were told by one of her friends
that during that time,
she spent very little time playing with the other girls.
Most of her time, outside of school, was spent
sitting on her bed studying and reading.

Before coming to the orphanage,
this sweet girl lost her parents to an accident and illness,
then spent much of her childhood
with relatives in, in extreme poverty.

So all of this explains why she has a very difficult time
playing, participating in pretend tea parties, and just being silly.

We are trying to change all that.

If there's a silly family she can learn from,
it's definitely us!

Shortly after we came home from China,
I told Macy she should get on the
swing set with Lucy.
I could see that she was extremely out of
her comfort zone....and didn't quite know what to do.
She tolerated it for a while,
then got off.

Then yesterday,
Lucy wanted to swing and I asked Macy if she wanted
to swing also....it was as if she was just waiting
for me to ask because eagerly hopped
up and got on the swing.

Again,
she was cautious and found that having fun, in this way,
was a bit new....but she did seem to enjoy it.

I assured her that everyone loves to swing...
even old mamas like me!

Then we had a little fun throwing hotdog buns
to the chickens.

Each day brings some progress with Macy,
although honestly...there are some
days that we seem at a standstill...or even
a few steps back.
But overall, it is getting better....
this morning she even asked me if she could
watch CCTV.
Wow. I was so excited! I know that seems
really small...but actually, it's really huge that she felt confident
enough to use her English...and assert herself
to make a request!

And lastly,
as no post is truly complete with out flare of Lucy in it...
The other day Nick told Lucy that Macy was his sister too.
WELL...that did not go over well with our little
dictator princess.

She BOLDLY told Nick that Macy was her sister...
and that he has his own sister who is
still in China.

Well now....

I just love reading about how the Lord is changing the lives of these children through your love. :) Thank you so much for sharing, it really blesses my heart.

Looks like you might have to adopt again in order to settle this debater between Lucy & Nick! We have a lot of days lately when it seems like we're at a stand-still, or going backwards. I keep telling myself that this is normal and good for them to regress and then "regrow" in our families. At least it makes me feel a little better on those off days.

hmmm...do I see another Ch*na trip in the future?! :)

Love the pictures. Looks like Macy and Lucy have been sisters forever...well, I guess they have since God had it all planned out from the beginning of time.

Great post!

Oh my goodness, my friend. Her past brought such tears to my eyes. It just is so not right. Bless her sweet little heart.
She really does seem to be growing in leaps and bounds--considering all she has been through in her short life. I know all too well that when we're in the middle of it, the progress seems so slow.
I can already see a brightness in her smile that was not there a month ago :)
It's all good, sweet friend. God is healing her fragile heart!

LOL! Gotta love that Lucy!
I guess I didn't realize that Macy was only in the orphanage for 2 years. May I ask if she talks much about that? About how hard it must have been for her to be placed there at that age, or why exactly she was placed there at that particular time? That sweet girl has been through A LOT!I am so glad to see her blossom and open up with you guys, even if it is slow! You all are SO BLESSED!!

Anna has said the same thing to Johnny! Sarah is her sister ONLY!!

I love seeing the kids get their childhood back. The pics of Macy are a joy to see! Did Macy know how to pump the swing when she got on it? She may be shy about some things because she doesn't know how to do them?

Blessings on your journey!!
